For the Change of Scenery assignment, I created the photo above. I guess the daycare decided to hire the heavy metal band Slipknot to entertain the kids.
Behind the Creation
As strange as it may seem, I am a fan of rock and heavy metal. I don’t keep up with it nowadays but heavy metal was actually the first genre of music I ever got into. I listen to a very wide range of music, if the song is good I will listen to it regardless of what genre it is. I tried to pick a very colorful background and then I decided to pick a daycare. The band dresses in a very animalistic manner with grunge masks and clothing. So putting them in this type of environment makes them look ridiculous.
So I finally got around to getting Photoshop on my laptop so this assignment was not as hard to do since I did not have to use some crappy online photo editor.
After opening photoshop, I opened both of my image files which are seen by the two tabs containing the image of the band that I want and the day care background
I dragged the tab containing the slipknot image to the bottom of the window so I could get a split vertical view of both my images
Then in the left menu, I selected the “Polygon Lasso Tool”. (You might need to right-click on this button to switch to the Polygon Lasso Tool).
Then I used this tool to select around the band members to select the area of the image that I will crop into the day care image. Once I was done, a dotted line appeared around the area that I selected. (I just showed you how it looks for the tutorial, I obviously did a better cropping job than this for the actual image).
I pressed Command+J on my Mac (Control+J for Windows) to then create a new layer for the cropped portion of the slipknot image. You can now see the two layers in the right menu.
I then clicked the eye on the “Background” layer in the right menu to remove the background and only show the parts that I cropped out.
Since I was in a split tab view, I dragged the bottom tab down a bit so I could see the top tab containing the daycare image. I can now simply drag the cropped out image of the band from the bottom into the day care on the top.
After I moved the image of the band, I made the top tab bigger since I was working here now. I went to “Edit” and selected “Free Transform” to resize the image layer containing the band.
After resizing the layer to what I wanted, I clicked on the “Move Tool” which is the first item in the left menu. I then applied the transformation by clicking “Apply” in the dialogue box.
The I went to “File” and clicked “Save As” to save the image to my local computer.
